Punch is the most efficient way to serve a large crowd, because the math is simple and the labor is front-loaded. One gallon equals 16 cups at about 8 ounces each, and most guests have two to three cups of punch over an event, so a single gallon covers roughly five to eight people. For a party of 40, that is six to eight gallons. The whole point is that you mix it once and let guests serve themselves, instead of building dozens of individual drinks all night.

Build it on a ratio you can scale and taste before the party. A reliable base is about one part spirit, one part citrus or sour, and two to three parts juice or soda, adjusted to taste, with the alcohol kept light enough that nobody is surprised by how strong a punch is. Always make a small test batch a day or two ahead and taste it cold and over ice, since a punch that tastes balanced at room temperature often goes flat or too sweet once chilled and diluted. Scale the recipe up from the version you actually liked.

Presentation and dilution are the two things that separate a good punch bowl from a watery one. Use a large drink dispenser or a proper bowl with a ladle so guests can serve themselves cleanly, and label it clearly as alcoholic, especially if a non-alcoholic punch is sitting nearby. Freeze a block or ring of ice, ideally made from some of the punch or juice itself, rather than using cubes; one large piece melts slowly and keeps the batch from thinning out over hours. Keep a backup batch in the fridge to refill rather than topping a half-empty bowl with plain ice.
