Party Food Planning, Common Questions

Quick answers to the most common party food planning questions.

How much food do I need for a party?
A general rule is 1 pound of total food per adult for a 2 to 3 hour party. Per person that is about 3 slices of pizza, 6 wings, 3 tacos, or 1.5 burgers. Add 10 to 15% extra for big appetites and unexpected guests.
How many people does one pizza feed?
One large pizza is 8 slices, which feeds about 2 adults at 3 slices each as a main dish. For 10 people order 4 large pizzas, and for 20 people order 8. If pizza is a side rather than the main, the calculator's other-food setting cuts that by 30%.
How many chicken wings per person for a party?
Plan 6 wings per person when wings share the table with other food. For 20 guests that is 120 wings, and for 50 guests 300. Buy by the package and round up, since wings are sold by weight rather than by the piece.
How much food do I need for 50 people?
For 50 people, one main dish works out to roughly 19 large pizzas, or 150 tacos, or 300 chicken wings, or 75 burgers. Pick one of those as the main rather than adding them together, then use the food-for-50-guests page for a full menu across several dishes.
How do you calculate drinks for a party?
A standard rule is one drink per person per hour. For a 3-hour party, plan 3 drinks per guest. For 20 guests at a 3-hour event that is about 60 drinks in total, split across beer, wine and soft drinks according to your crowd.
How much does it cost to feed 20 people at a party?
It depends almost entirely on the main. On this site's price bands, 8 large pizzas for 20 guests runs $96 to $160, and the same crowd on wings runs $90 to $180. Budget for one main plus two sides, and use the per-food calculators for an exact figure.
